Athenaeum 2009:A: the New Age Glossary, Interview with Pele, How to Meet Difficulties

January 8th, 2009 § 1

Update:  the Athenaeum is no longer available for download. Two of the articles (Dealing with Difficult Times and Transits and Pele: Fire in the Water) are available as separate blog posts.

The Athenaeum is a biweekly magazine / almanac, a fortnightly gathering of philosophy, religion, puzzles, language, spirit, meditation, inner landscapes, art, magic, manifestation, weather. There are 26 fortnights in the year, and 26 letters in the English alphabet. This is issue A of 2009.

In this issue, three articles:

Towards a New Age Glossary. Recently I had a rather tumultuous emotional period with my wife, during which we were both called on to put into words feelings that were complex, strong, and sometimes confused or amorphous.  We’re both linguists, and pretty good with words, but it was a difficult task and we struggled with it. And the whole thing was aggravated by the fact that we actually come from different subcultures… without realizing it.  What different subcultures? Let me give you an example, and I think you’ll see what I’m talking about immediately.

Dealing with Difficult Times and Transits. At this time of year, we frequently take stock of ourselves. Is our health ok? How about our family, and the other important relationships in our lives? Our education? Our career?… And usually we find ourselves wanting. We could be a little healthier, our family could be a little more tightly bonded, and frankly we could be making more money than we do. And so we might draw up a list of New Year’s resolutions, or at least join a gym or buff up our resume. And we might follow our new plans for a week or a month, and maybe we’ll even make some hard-won progress in these areas… But frankly, this whole process is ridiculous, from start to finish.

Pele: Fire in the Water. Well, first, of course, Obama was elected, and he grew up in Hawaii… And then my friend Slade (of sladeroberson.com) went to Hawaii for angelic training and, as it turned out, met essential people for his life path… And then I stumbled onto a fascinating podcast called “Jedi trainer” (hunatrainer.com), which is really a tutorial on Huna, a (the?) Hawaiian spiritual tradition… And then I saw my very first Hawaiian quarter — absolutely gorgeous, too… And then, it turned out that one of the people in my work group is getting an all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii as a thank-you from the company for basically being an awesome guy… What on earth was all this Hawaii stuff about?

This edition of the Athenaeum also includes the usual weather, holidays, moon phases, weekly words (wine and griffin), art, and more, all brought to you by the letter A.

(Note: there is no puzzle in this edition — I ran out of time, and in any case I haven’t received any feedback either way on it. If you miss it and want it back, let me know!)

Enjoy!
