Regarding Loki, have you read Neil Gaiman's &lt;em&gt;American Gods&lt;/em&gt;?  Well worth a read if you haven't.

Interesting you mention that their mother is a tree - I'd say that one of her names is Hertha -- check out this &lt;a href="http://www.bartleby.com/236/162.html" rel="nofollow"&gt;amazing poem by Swinburne&lt;/a&gt;.

Yggdrasil as time reminds me of &lt;em&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.poetry-archive.com/y/to_the_rose_upon_the_rood_of_time.html" rel="nofollow"&gt;The Rose upon the Rood of Time&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/em&gt; by WB Yeats.</description>
